I really enjoyed the theatrical cut, and now, get ready for all the nice storylines that were deleted. What you’ll see on the director’s cut (referenced from AICN) SPOILERS AHEAD!!:

- did you realize that the priest at the beginning is actually the half-brother of Balian (Orlando Bloom)? Their relationship is much more complicated and unpleasant in this version, and we learn that Balian is in jail following his wife’s death, thanks to his brother’s claim that he is possessed by the devil.

- We also learn that Balian was an engineer before he became a blacksmith, that he built war machines when he was part of an army, and he’s released from prison because the local lord needs Balian’s help. So much more work is put into the establishment of Balian’s character that by the time we actually meet him in the film now, we have a sense of who he is.

- The lord that Balian works for? Turns out, he’s Neeson’s brother, and when Godfrey shows up in the village, he’s coming home. There’s an entire scene that takes place at the castle where it’s clear that his absence made it possible for his brother to take over, something that his brother doesn’t want to see change. Since Godfrey has no heir, if he dies, then his new lands also become the property of the brother, something that makes more sense of the battle scenes involving Neeson and his group of soldiers.

- When Neeson goes to talk to Balian the first time, he stops at the door to the smith’s shop, looking out at a particular spot. He flashes back to when he was younger, to when he was with Balian’s mother, and that one moment says all we need to know about the particular paradise that Godfrey seeks and that he knows he’ll never find again. It explains so much about why he would want to come and make amends and reach out to Balian. He’s looking for absolution, and he figures he can find it this way, and the film shows us instead of just telling us.

- Baldwin IV is shown refusing the last sacrament from Patriarch Heraclius.

- Another major change is the re-insertion of the character of Baldwin V (who was shown in some of the trailers), here depicted as the son of Sibylla by Guy. He is portrayed as suffering from leprosy, like his uncle. His death is depicted as an act of euthanasia by his mother, using poison.

- Balian also fights a climactic duel with Guy.

- Additionally, Eva Green’s role as the Queen has been expanded, and she’s not there just for Orland Bloom’s sexual interest.

- More insight into absolution, forgiveness, and politics in this time period.

(Please note: This is for the 4 disc director’s cut–for some reason this is combined with ALL versions of the movie including the Blu-ray. The Blu-ray features ONLY the first two discs of this set on one Blu-ray disc. None of the discs with extras are included as part of the package).

Sometimes longer is better particularly when you have a complex story. The theatrical version of “Kingdom of Heaven” was flawed from the beginning with significant narrative gaps that undermine the character development and the smooth momentum of the story. That’s because Fox had Scott cut the film by nearly an hour deleted significant and important character development at the expense of trying to fit in more showings per theater. The result was a sprawling ambitious project that had the epic scope of “Lawrence of Arabia” without the narrative strength. Thank God for DVD. “Kingdom of Heaven: The Director’s Cut” restores the material demonstrating that the original 3 hour cut was a brilliant film that played theatrical late last year after the film had bombed at the box office. The reason the film bombed was the idiotic decision to cut the film and make it shorter reducing the film’s impact. While it might not have made a huge amount of money it would have done well at the box office as a prestige film AND would have deservedly been nominated for Oscars. Much of the background story is fleshed out and the relationships between the various characters are more clearly defined. “Kingdom of Heaven” is a magnificent epic film that recalls the power of David Lean’s epics and allows Scott’s historical drama to breath. If you’ve seen the theatrical cut you owe it to yourself to see this major film from a major talent.

The film is presented like the “Lord of the Rings” deluxe sets with the film spread over two discs. Featuring a beautiful anamorphic transfer this version of the film actually looks superior with less issues with digital artifacts when compared to the previous edition of the film. The 5.1 audio presentation sounds wonderful with both a 5.1 and 5.1DTS track that makes exceptional use of the format. You’ll feel like you’ve put plopped down into the middle of the battle sequences in the action sequences and there’s wonderful ambient sound effects sprinkled throughout the film even during sequences that are dialogue driven.

Special features are terrific in this set. We start off with an introduction by Scott discussing the “Director’s Cut” compared to the theatrical version of the film. Featuring Scott, writer William Monahan and actor Orlando Bloom the first commentary track (it was recorded separately and pieced together) becomes a rich resource of trivia beginning with the origin of the project and how Scott and Monahan ended up working together. The second commentary track has visual effects director Wes Sewell, assistant director Adam Somner and producer Lisa Elizey discussing the technical aspects of the shoot and the challenges they faced covering everything from the use of digital and on set effects to second unit photography. The last commentary has editor Dody Dorn discussing the two different versions of the film. We also have production notes and information about the shooting of the film provided as text commentary.

The third and fourth discs have most of the supplements. Unfortunately neither has the excellent A&E documentary that was part of the two disc set so you may want to hold on to your other set if you haven’t sold it already. We have “The Path to Redemption” presented in six separate parts with each running anywhere from a half hour to twenty minutes a piece covering the making of the film. The first of the three parts include text, images, early screenplay drafts and notes on the shooting of the movie. The second part has cast rehearsals covering everything from the training with the weapons to costume tests. The third of the three parts has storyboards as well as a short documentary featuring scholars discussing the accuracy of the film.

The fourth disc features the last three parts on the film and includes video shot on location, storyboard galleries and photo galleries as well as deleted/extended/alternate scenes with optional commentary by Scott and editor Dorn. There’s also a section on the visual effects of the film as well as various sound elements to create the unique sound mix of the film presented in various stages. The last section features trailers, TV spots, the Showest presentation. There’s also footage from various premieres around the world, poster galleries, footage of the press junket shot on video, image and poster galleries as well as a brief featurette similar to the one done for “Gladiator: The Extended Version” that discussed the creation of this special edition.

An exceptional film that was badly butchered by Fox prior to its premiere due to skittish leadership at Fox, the film has finally been presented the way it should have been in the first place. Fox DVD has done an exceptional job in putting together this package and has made amends for the way it handled the film when it was released theatrical last year. Highly recommended.

The History Channel has an unfortunate though deserved reputation for showing way too many specials on World War II. If it involves Nazis, Stalin or the Luftwaffe you better believe the History Channel has picked it apart from every possible angle – which is why their programming that strays from those subjects comes like a breath of fresh air. The Universe, a show covering various galactic anomalies and phenomena, uses 3D composite models and animations to provide a visual context for lessons from leaders in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. The show’s scope knows no bounds, so strap in for brilliant educational ride.

Assuming you believe the universe, as we know it, is older than 4,000-6,000 years old, there’s so much about the great beyond that bears explaining. The show explores a commonly held belief one week while shedding light on cosmic occurrences you never knew existed (but will find enrapturing) the next. Each of the 18 episodes tackles a different topic; from “Alien Planets” to the harrowing prospects of “Cosmic Apocalypse” the show’s ability to hold your attention never fails. To think that the discovery of a new earth is close to a reality should intrigue even the most diehard skeptics, especially in this field which seems to generate more questions than answers. Or maybe you’re more interested in the future of space travel or colonization? Black holes? Or, my personal favorite title “Biggest Things in Space”? Come on, if you aren’t slightly interested in the biggest things in that final frontier then you just can’t be pleased. The History Channel has a really great thing going with this series and the second season keeps the pace with a nice supply of educational installments.

The one misstep of The Universe would seem to be some of the less than convincing “authorities” brought in on the subject. While each and every one of them may have a brilliant mind, hearing the opinion of what appears to be a college astronomy major sitting on some large rocks doesn’t exactly fill the audience with confidence that every piece of information is to be taken at its word. The show has plenty of interesting things to say, but they really ought to have found slightly more credible sources (or at least had the sources they used appear professional) to put any contrarian arguments to rest. It’s not a total failure on the show’s part, but with so many astronomy experts out there it seems unnecessary to settle – even if they were just trying to inject a little bit of youth into the proceedings; the injection isn’t necessary though. To think that an audience would take slight at a show exploring some of the deepest darkest secrets of our universe for not featuring a variety of ages amongst the experts just seems ridiculous. Just like any piece on World War II, the better is the most informed – age be damned.

On Blu-ray the 3D models achieve mixed appearances. In some instances the graphics look phenomenal and elevate the show to its proper scale. Other times, the renderings just don’t quite meet the 1080p demands and a bit of pixilation becomes visible. Unlike a special effects slathered feature, this shortcoming isn’t as damaging in a series of lectures on space; sure we notice, but the images are complementary to the words, not vice versa. Instead of being upset with the show for sometimes failing graphically, it’s easier to marvel at the visual aids provided for such riveting material. As you might expect, the audio isn’t really a factor that varies from episode to episode. The speech tracks are all equalized and crystal clear so you won’t have to fidget with your remote.

Blu-ray Extra Features:

A singular featurette casts a spotlight on the grass root community of the astronomy field: “Backyard Astronomers”. You might not be so moved as to go out and buy a telescope for your home, but the featurette is as interesting and compelling as the rest of the season and well worth your time.

The History Channel knows science, and they’re good at making complex systems and ideas easy to understand – and approachable – for the everyday observer. The Universe, Complete Season Two on Blu-ray is no exception. This four-disc set features all 18 episodes, nearly 15 hours of content, including covering topics like Dark Matter, Exoplanets, Cosmic Collisions, Supernovas, and more. And while episodes are only loosely tied together by the fact that the subjects covered are part of – or take place in – our universe, it doesn’t seem overly odd or disjointed- especially for the younger viewers.

Fantastic phenomena and alien worlds are re-created through extremely realistic computer animation, which is shockingly detailed and stunningly beautiful. The visuals take viewers inside wonders that man has only viewed from afar, giving a close-up look at the fascinating inner workings of the cosmos around us.

The series also includes documentary style interviews with experts in the field, as well as footage from both past and current scientific exploration programs and an introduction to some of the tools and devices these scientists use to explore the universe. A nice contrast to the computer re-creations, this live-action documentary aspect of the series does a good job of providing balance, grounding the concepts and reminding viewers that there are actual people working to find answers and discover new information about the space around us- it’s not simply Star Trek.

Whether used as an educational tool or simply for entertainment value, The Universe – Season Two on Blu-ray is interesting and enthralling.

Special Features

There aren’t a lot of “extras” on The Universe, but given the nature of the series – and the fact that it is a television series – that’s not surprising. There is one Bonus Feature, a featurette called Backyard Astronomers, which explores the world of amateur star-gazers- men and women who spend their spare time learning about – and exploring – the universe… from their backyards.

The biggest benefit to the Blu-ray release lies in the presentation – true widescreen and HD.

And of course the subject matter itself.

An extremely violent, sometimes downright grusome, drama series about a mob family, Kingpin invites inevitable comparisons with The Sopranos–the pilot episode is even directed by Sopranos alumnus Allen Coulter–but the basic premise is more a South-of-the-border Godfather, with Migul Cadena (Yancey Arias) as the conflicted Michael Corleone-type character who finds himself inexorably but somewhat reluctantly taking charge of his family’s Mexican drug cartel. Written and produced by David Mills, a graduate of NYPD Blu and Homicide: Life on the Street, the show has all the right credentials for a successful TV drama, combining a colorful ensemble cast and evocative locations on either side of the Rio Grande, but somehow it failed to find a big enough audience to get beyond one season (a similar fate befell the equally praiseworthy Boomtown).

Unlike Tony Soprano, Migul’s (American) wife Marlene (Sheryl Lee, still best known as Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks) supports her husband’s position with Machiavellian schemes of her own, though both parents strive to shelter their 8-year-old son from involvement in the messier side of the family business. After a bloody coup in the pilot episode, Migul and his ruthless brother Chato (Bobby Cannavale) cement their hold over the business, while struggling with the twin threats of family infighting and law enforcement pressure. As in Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, here the DEA agents–principally go-getting Delia Flores (Angela Alvarado Rosa)–are significant characters in their own right. Also north of the border is cowardly plastic surgeon Dr. Heywood Klein (Brian Benben), whose often unwilling involvement with small-time crooks (especially his self-appointed bodyguard Junie, played with deadpan wit by Shay Roundtree) provides much-needed comic relief amid the scenes of casual slaughter. With its vivid depiction of a sleazy, utterly amoral world, Kingpin makes for compelling viewing, even if it never quite attains the effortlessly sublime levels of its northern predecessor. –Mark Walker

The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniqus, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. Hayao Miyazaki gained widespread attention in Japan for his complex ecological manga series, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1982), which he adapted for the screen two years later. One thousand years after a war devastated much of the Earth, humanity clings to existence at the fringes of a vast, polluted forest inhabited by monstrous insects. Only Nausicaa, the princess of the tiny realm of the Valley of the Wind, grasps the environmental significance of the forest. She sees beyond petty wars and national rivalries to the only viable future for the planet. In Nausicaa, Miyazaki began to explore elements he would develop more fully in his later films: daring, compassionate heroines; exciting flying sequnces; colorful side characters; strong interpersonal relationships; and a call for an ecologically sustainable way of life. Nausicaa prefigures Sheeta in Castle in the Sky and Chihiro in Spirited Away, just as the rough and ready Asbel anticipates Pazu in Castle in the Sky and Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke. For years, Nausicaa was available in the United States only as the badly re-edited Warriors of the Wind. The new English dub from Disney presents the film in its entirety, with strong vocal performances by Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart, Alison Lohman, and Edward James Olmos.
